‘You have a great gift for continually reinventing yourself.’
This comment from a relative startled me at the time, although I have come to see the truth in it. In the space of a few decades I have passed through several wildly contrasting phases, shifted ideological positions with unusual agility, transformed my physical appearance almost beyond recognition and moved geographically from the northeast of Scotland to the southwest of England. It is a life that has involved mental hospitals, monastic vigils and burlesque stage shows in rapid succession – perhaps the one continuous thread throughout this chimeric existence has been my passion for writing.
